Sara Beth Liebe, a contestant on American Idol, was criticized by judge Katy Perry for being a young mother of three. After receiving a standing ovation from all three judges, she abruptly quit the show, stating that she wanted to go home to her family.
She explained, “I don’t even really know what show business is, and then I came here and it’s just a little taste of it.” Since I was 18, I’ve been a parent. Since the age of 18, I have been married. As a result, I don’t think I fit the mold. I’m trying to understand everything. I’m not sure.”
Despite this, she put her nerves aside and gave an incredible performance of “Roxanne” by The Police, to which both the judges and her fellow contestants gave her a standing ovation. However she actually dazed everybody by reporting her choice to leave the opposition.
She stated, “This opportunity is really awesome, but this is actually going to be my final performance because my heart is at home.” Thus, I will return to my children at home. I suppose they need me. I’m grateful.
In the past, Perry sparked widespread outrage when he made remarks that, according to some, were meant to disparage Liebe for being a young mother. Perry said that Liebe had been “laying on the table too much,” implying that she had been having too much sex or had too many children, in addition to the behavior that was generally referred to as bullying.
In a TikTok video, Liebe later responded, saying:
I find it so cool that women encourage and support one another. Also, I feel that mother disgracing is really weak. I also wanted to take this opportunity to say that I see all of the young mothers and mothers in general who have commented on all of the videos, posts, and everything else. I believe that being a mother and a woman is hard enough. I just wanted to let you know that I see and hear you, that I am thankful for you, and that you are deserving.
And don’t stop loving your kids. Nobody ought to be depressed about that.
However, Perry suddenly became Liebe’s most vocal supporter during her Hollywood audition, pleading with her to stay.
“No. Perry said, “Sarah Beth, I know life is scary. We’re going to figure this out.” Remember that self-love is just as important as motherly love—it’s easier to walk away than to be rеjесted. Try not to leave the opposition.”
Live Action founder and president Lila Rose urged women to remember that women can accomplish anything as mothers and that motherhood is a calling that should not be diminished in response to the controversy surrounding Perry’s sexist remarks.
